How To Create Your Own Seat At The Table

The Senate’s confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson as the the sixth women justice ever, and the first black women justice, marks a welcome milestone in our nation’s history.

We are reminded of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968, who once said: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

It is clear from the drive of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson that this path is invaluable, from her track record of study and service - with a dash of humor thrown in - all while parenting two daughters.

When I switched my career from finance to fashion, there wasn’t a seat at the table … nobody had a place card ready to welcome me in. Nobody encouraged me to make such a drastic career change, nor did anyone think I would succeed. I remember so clearly how everyone thought I was pursuing a “hobby” and would be back in finance within six months.

nstead of listening to others, I listened to my own voice.

Instead of listening to others, I listened to my own voice. I took the action that would get me to where I wanted to go. I packed up and moved to Italy to gain experience in the ever-so-elusive world of high-fashion. After much hard work and sheer determination, I had the great privilege to learn from luxury brands such as Dior and Dolce & Gabbana.

And today ? I have the honor of dressing America’s current and future leaders in AYSHA NY styles.

I encourage ambitious women to bring their own unique blend of skills and intuition to the role they plan to fulfill, and to invest in a wardrobe that reflects that.
